Miso-Glazed Tofu Steaks with Sesame-Ginger Glaze Recipe
Description:
Imagine four golden-brown tofu steaks, glistening with a rich, savory miso glaze. The edges are crisp and slightly caramelized, while the inside remains tender and subtly sweet. The sesame-ginger glaze adds a nutty aroma and a touch of spicy warmth, contrasting beautifully with the umami richness of the miso. The vibrant green of the sliced green onions provides a fresh, contrasting color, making this dish as visually appealing as it is delicious. The tofu steaks are substantial and satisfying, with a texture that is both firm and slightly yielding. The overall appearance is rustic yet elegant, perfect for a weeknight dinner or a more formal occasion.
Ingredients:
- - 1 block (14 oz) extra-firm tofu, pressed
- - 2 tablespoons white miso paste
- - 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- - 1 tablespoon mirin
- - 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- - 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- - 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
- - 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- - 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- - 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
- - 2 green onions, thinly sliced, for garnish
- - 1 tablespoon olive oil
Instructions:
- 1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Press the tofu block to remove excess water using a tofu press or by wrapping it in paper towels and placing a heavy object on top for at least 30 minutes. This is crucial for a crispy exterior.
- 2. Cut the pressed tofu block into 4 even steaks, approximately 1-inch thick.
- 3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the miso paste, soy sauce, mirin, rice vinegar, sesame oil, grated ginger, garlic powder, and black pepper until smooth and well combined.
- 4. Place the tofu steaks in a shallow baking dish. Pour the miso glaze evenly over the tofu, ensuring both sides are coated.
- 5. Bake for 20 minutes, then flip the tofu steaks and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the tofu is golden brown and crispy on both sides. The internal temperature should reach 140°F (60°C).
- 6. While the tofu is baking, prepare the sesame-ginger glaze. In a small saucepan, combine 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 2 tablespoons of sesame seeds. Cook over medium heat for 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently, until the sesame seeds are lightly toasted and fragrant. Remove from heat and set aside.
- 7. Once the tofu is cooked, remove it from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes before serving.
- 8. Drizzle the toasted sesame-ginger glaze over the tofu steaks. Garnish with sliced green onions and serve immediately.
