A warm, rustic dessert featuring a vibrant medley of mixed berries nestled beneath a golden-brown, crunchy oat crumble topping. The berries are a deep ruby red and dark purplish-blue, contrasting beautifully with the light brown oat crumble. The aroma is sweet and comforting, with notes of cinnamon and warm baked fruit. The texture is a delightful combination of soft, juicy berries and a satisfyingly crisp, buttery crumble. The edges of the crumble are deeply browned and slightly caramelized, while the center is soft and moist. The overall appearance is rustic and homely, suggesting warmth and comfort.
Ingredients:
- - 4 cups mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries)
- - 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- - 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- - 1 teaspoon lemon zest
- - 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- - 1/2 cup rolled oats
- - 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- - 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
- - 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- - 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
Instructions:
- 1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 8x8 inch baking dish.
- 2. In a large bowl, gently combine the mixed berries, granulated sugar, 1/4 cup all-purpose flour, lemon zest, and cinnamon. Make sure not to crush the berries excessively.
- 3. Pour the berry mixture into the prepared baking dish.
- 4. In a separate bowl, combine the rolled oats, 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, brown sugar, and nutmeg.
- 5. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Work quickly to prevent the butter from melting.
- 6. Sprinkle the oat crumble topping evenly over the berry filling.
- 7. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. If the topping browns too quickly, loosely tent with foil.
- 8. Let the fruit crumble cool slightly before serving. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, if desired.
