Ingredients:

  • - 1 pound calamari tubes and tentacles, cleaned and cut into rings
  • - 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • - 1 teaspoon salt
  • - 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • - 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • - 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • - 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • - 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • - 1 cup vegetable oil, for frying
  • - 1 cup marinara sauce
  • - 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
  • - 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • - 1 clove garlic, minced

Instructions:

  1. 1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder. Add the calamari rings and toss to coat evenly.
  2. 2. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or deep fryer to 375°F (190°C). Use a thermometer to ensure accurate temperature.
  3. 3. Carefully add the calamari to the hot oil in batches, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. This prevents the oil temperature from dropping too much.
  4. 4. Fry the calamari for 2-3 minutes per batch, until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a wire rack to drain excess oil.
  5. 5. While the calamari is frying, prepare the spicy marinara sauce. In a small saucepan, combine the marinara sauce, chopped parsley, red pepper flakes, and minced garlic.
  6. 6. Bring the sauce to a simmer over medium heat and cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, to allow the flavors to meld.
  7. 7. Once the calamari is completely fried and drained, transfer it to a serving bowl. Pour the spicy marinara sauce over the top.
  8. 8. Garnish with extra parsley, if desired. Serve immediately while hot and crispy.
