Ingredients:

  • - 1 block (14 oz) extra-firm tofu, pressed
  • - 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • - 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • - 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • - 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • - 1 tablespoon honey
  • - 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger
  • - 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • - 1 teaspoon sesame seeds
  • - 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • - 2 green onions, thinly sliced, for garnish
  • - Sesame seeds, for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. 1. Press the tofu: Wrap the tofu block in several layers of paper towels and place it between two heavy plates or a tofu press for at least 30 minutes. This removes excess moisture and allows for crispier results.
  2. 2. Cut the tofu: Once pressed, cut the tofu into 1-inch cubes.
  3. 3. Prepare the cornstarch: Place the cornstarch in a shallow dish. Dredge each tofu cube in the cornstarch, ensuring it's evenly coated. Gently shake off any excess.
  4. 4. Pan-fry the tofu: Heat 1 tablespoon of sesame oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, carefully add the tofu cubes in a single layer, avoiding overcrowding. Fry for about 5-7 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy. Remove the tofu from the skillet and set aside.
  5. 5. Make the glaze: In the same skillet, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of sesame oil. Add the soy sauce, rice vinegar, honey, grated ginger, minced garlic, and red pepper flakes (if using). Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the sauce slightly thickens, about 2-3 minutes.
  6. 6. Combine glaze and tofu: Return the crispy tofu cubes to the skillet and toss gently to coat them evenly with the sesame ginger glaze. Cook for another 1-2 minutes, allowing the glaze to caramelize slightly.
  7. 7. Garnish and serve: Transfer the glazed tofu to a serving plate. Garnish with sliced green onions and extra sesame seeds (optional).
  8. 8. Serve immediately: Serve the Crispy Tofu with Sesame Ginger Glaze hot, as a main dish or as a side with rice, noodles, or vegetables.
