Caesar Salad Recipe

Description:

A classic Caesar salad presents itself as a vibrant and inviting dish. The deep green, crisp leaves of Romaine lettuce form a refreshing base that is beautifully coated in a creamy dressing, glistening with hints of garlic and lemon. Scattered throughout are crunchy, golden-brown croutons adding texture, along with delicate flakes of Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese that provide an elegant touch. The optional protein, whether succulent grilled chicken or lightly seared shrimp, adds an appealing contrast to the leafy greens. The overall appearance of the salad is fresh and enticing, making it a perfect starter or light meal that promises a balance of flavors and textures.

Ingredients:

  • - Romaine lettuce
  • - Croutons
  • - Parmesan cheese, shaved or grated
  • - Caesar dressing (made from garlic, anchovies, egg yolk, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, olive oil, salt, and pepper)
  • - Freshly cracked black pepper (to taste)
  • - Optional: Grilled chicken breast or shrimp for added protein

Instructions:

  1. 1. Begin by washing the Romaine lettuce thoroughly under cold water. Remove excess water by spinning it in a salad spinner or patting it dry with a clean kitchen towel.
  2. 2. Chop the Romaine lettuce into bite-sized pieces and place it in a large salad bowl.
  3. 3. Prepare the croutons if using homemade: cube day-old bread and toss it with olive oil, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) until golden brown and crunchy, about 10-15 minutes. Allow to cool.
  4. 4. If making your own Caesar dressing, combine minced garlic, anchovies, and egg yolk in a bowl. Whisk together, then gradually stream in olive oil while whisking constantly until emulsified. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper to taste. Adjust seasoning if needed. You can also use store-bought dressing for convenience.
  5. 5. Drizzle the prepared Caesar dressing over the chopped Romaine lettuce and toss gently to coat all the leaves evenly.
  6. 6. Sprinkle the croutons and the shaved or grated Parmesan cheese over the top of the salad. Toss lightly again to combine.
  7. 7. Finish the salad with freshly cracked black pepper on top and, if desired, add sliced grilled chicken breast or shrimp for protein. Serve immediately.
